TWO WHEELS · FUEL NOTES INCLUDED

Rides where the road is the destination

These are not the Instagram passes with cafe queues at the top. These are the roads riders trade among themselves: gorges where the tarmac is a rumour, forest corridors with a fuel gap you plan your day around, and high valleys where the ride back is as good as the ride in. Each card carries the season window and the honest road character.

Himachal Pradesh

Spiti beyond the Kaza circuit

The high desert's second layer: fossil slopes, homestay villages and a 500-year-old monk.

The full Spiti circuit beyond Kaza's cafes: Pin, Mudh and the high villages. Carry spares; the road past Losar decides your schedule, not you.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep base: Kaza 6+ days
Shimla-Kinnaur-Sumdo-Kaza (year-round, 2 days with a Kinnaur halt) or Manali-Gramphu-Batal-Kaza (roughly June to October only, one long day).

Pangi valley: Killar and the Bhatori villages

Himachal's most remote inhabited valley, reachable only when Sach Pass lets you in.

India's most notorious road: the cliff-hugging traverse into Pangi valley, open barely three months a year. For experienced riders only, and worth every grey hair.

best: Jul, Aug, Sep base: Killar 6+ days
Chamba to Killar via Tissa, Bairagarh and the Sach Pass (4,414 m), a full rough day, open roughly July to September. Alternatively the long Udaipur-Killar road when conditions allow.

Miyar valley & Udaipur, Lahaul's far corner

A hundred-kilometre valley of wildflower meadows and twelve farming villages, called the Valley of Flowers of Lahaul.

Udaipur to the Miyar valley: a dead-end road into a glacier valley where the tarmac simply gives up. The last 30 km are the story you will tell.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep base: Udaipur (Lahaul) 5+ days
Manali through the Atal Tunnel, then Tandi (last fuel) to Udaipur, about 110 km and 3 hrs. Khanjar, the last motorable village, is 25-30 km further up a rough road.

Ladakh

Zanskar: Padum and the monastery kingdom

A mountain-locked kingdom of gompas and barley fields, still one of the hardest valleys in India to reach.

The Padum road: from Kargil or over Shinku La from Jispa, this is the ride of the decade - gorges, glacier views and the Drang Drung from the saddle.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep base: Padum 6+ days
Two rough routes: Kargil to Padum via Parkachik and the Pensi La (full day, seasonal), or Darcha on the Manali-Leh axis over Shinku La to Padum (seasonal, rougher). Fly to Leh, drive to Kargil first.

Changthang beyond the tourist arc: Nyoma, Hanle & Puga

The high plateau's second lap: geothermal springs, dark-sky villages and nomad country past where the Pangong buses turn back.

Leh to the Changthang lakes: Hanle's empty sky-road and the Tso Moriri approach. Army checkpoints, long fuel gaps, and the best night skies in Asia.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep base: Nyoma / Hanle 5+ days
Leh to Nyoma via Upshi and the Indus gorge (5 hrs). Hanle is 2 hrs further. Tso Moriri via Mahe bridge on the return makes a loop.

Upper Kinnaur: Nako, Rarang & the Bhaba valley

Stone villages, apricot orchards and gompas where the Satluj gorge turns Tibetan.

The old Hindustan-Tibet road to Upper Kinnaur: carved cliff galleries, the Sutlej gorge below, and apple country at the top. Less traffic than the Spiti run.

best: Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct base: Powari / Kalpa side 5+ days
Shimla to Powari via Narkanda and Rampur (9-10 hrs). The Hindustan-Tibet road beyond Karchham is cut into near-vertical gorge walls.

Munsiyari & the Johar valley

The end of the Gori Ganga road, facing the five chimneys of the Panchachuli range.

The last hundred kilometres to Munsiyari are why people ride: the Gori gorge road with the Panchachuli wall growing ahead of you all day.

best: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct base: Munsiyari 5+ days
Kathgodam railhead to Munsiyari is about 280 km and 10-11 hrs via Almora and Berinag. Break the journey at Chaukori or Bageshwar.
